Been On Prozac. Really has stopped working. Would switching to Effexor be good?

Is Effexor a good SSRI? Went on Prozac after years of Paxil. Now after years on Prozac I need a change.
Answer:
Yes, Effexor can be good after other SSRI's have stopped working.
It very well could help you, it is very common to have to switch around before finding one that helps. Or even having to switch after years of help, as is your case. However, you really just need to ask your doctor this, they would know what would be best for you.
Effexor is a very effective antidepressant; however, Cymbalta always works in the same way (works on two receptors instead of one...like prozac, zoloft, and paxil). If you ever decide that you want to go off of Effexor you will regret it. It is one of the hardest antidepressants out there to taper off of. Cymbalta is not difficult to stop and takes effect a lot faster. I would ask your doctor about Cymbalta.
There is something that physicians call antidepressant "poop-out." After a while, an antidepressant stops working. A friend of mine who's a psychiatrist said that knowing whether something will work is "empirical," which in plain English means you try it and see if it works--otherwise known as "trial and error." Talk to your doctor and monitor any change of medication closely, with his or her assistance.
